Round 9 wrap-up
The last game of term two was chilly and foggy; and the opposition must have had a freezing cold start to the day out in Warrandyte. The game was at Alfred Crescent and the fog seemed to get thicker during the first half of the game.
The visitors played a strong first quarter, but a great goal early in the second quarter got our boys off the mark. It was a competitive game, with lots of good sessions of play. Warrandyte was at least one player down, so we lent a player to make up their numbers.
The boys should be proud: they played a hard game and never gave up.
Next training is Friday, July 12.
Next game is at Alfred Crescent, July 14 — be there for 9:30am.
Round 8 wrap-up
The boys had to don their mountain climbing gear this week. The ground Camberwell’s Lyndon Park had, let’s say, a slight gradient. No punt road end here – only the bottom paddock.
Well, the bottom paddock was definitely the scoring end. The other team came out fighting with some early goals. That was Fitzroy’s best quarter, and they fought hard in defence. It wasn’t enough to overcome the downhill advantage though. Come the second quarter the opposition kept up the pressure and some more goals were the result. The third quarter battle for the snakes clearly sparked some passion into the team – they put in all they had in the last quarter but it wasn’t enough to prevail over Camberwell.
Once again our boys played well and put in their all. Both teams played fair but hard game of footy. Spirits were high – great to see.
Round 7 wrap-up
It was great to be back on our home ground this week at Alfred Crescent Oval. We faced Surrey Park Panthers again for the second time in three weeks.
The boys kicked some early goals and showed some real courage and grit to keep fighting until the final siren. The interchange bench was bare, so there were no opportunities for a break. This didn’t seem to slow anyone down though – with the fight being taken up to the opposition until the end.
This was a tough and bruising game. The boys can hold their heads high. They showed that they were there to play footy and walked off the ground with dignity. They are a fine example of the FJFC values.
Round 6 wrap-up
For round 6, the boys travelled out to Macleod for a sunny but windy game for the indigenous round.
A decent westerly wind gave a distinct advantage to the team kicking to the eastern end of the ground! It was a big oval, leading to plenty of long kick and some good passages of play down the ground.
The boys held the opposition really well in third quarter and were very competitive in the fourth.
Round 5 wrap-up
This week saw our Lions take on the Panthers on the lush pastures of Surrey Park.
Once again, we faced a determined and skilled opposition and, once again, the boys responded with their own grit and determination. It was a see-sawing game with lots of changes of possession. The Panthers scored well in the first half, but not without some goals of our own in response. Coach Mark’s inspirational words at half time clearly had the desired effect. The boys came out of the blocks with 3 unanswered goals in the third quarter. In the end it wasn’t enough for victory, but they can hold their heads high for playing a clean game and putting in their all.
Round 4 wrap-up
After a slim victory over team Mums on Friday night in trying conditions, the boys were primed for a big game on Sunday. Everyone had a great time – and enjoyed some skilfully cooked Jonathan’s snags afterwards.
Match day on Sunday still had drizzly conditions, but that didn’t dampen spirits. Victory eluded us in the end, but the winners of the day were once again the Fitzroy boys. They fought valiantly in the face of some giants in the opposition Bullants, with their determination and speed bringing some great scoring moments.
Congrats to the winners of the mothers day raffle including Dan and Jenny, who will enjoy a well deserved night out at the Napier.
Round 3 wrap-up
The team had their first win of the season against Richmond Y today.
The boys were up at half-time, before Richmond fought back to be ahead early in the fourth quarter. Some fantastic play in a closely fought contest. Well done everyone on a great game!
Next week is Mother’s Day so there will be a kids versus mums game at training on Friday afternoon. Mums: remember to bring your boots!
Round 2 summary
The boys had a hard game against Hawthorn, a team that was tall, fast and tough.
Our next game is on May 5, 9:30am start (for a 10am game) at Alfred Crescent.
