Round #14 Coaches Report
Fitzroy v Preston Bullants R,
10 am Cox Oval
It seemed to be a bit of a chaotic morning. A slight change to the routine starting at 10 am, instead of 8:45. Another game at Cox oval for us in the second half of the season. However, it was blowing a gale this morning, and not only was it windy, but it seemed to be blowing straight down the ground.
It was also a bit chaotic as the boys were taking a bit longer than normal in the warm up to switch-on. Sometimes it is just like that. We had three captains today, Elliot, Thurston and Harvey, so hopefully, each one could marshall their zone.
Before the game had even started the marquees were blown over, and definitely were not going back up again today. In the first quarter, we were kicking with the wind, and with the slight downhill. After some recent good results, and a good result against this Preston team earlier in the year the team was a bit relaxed and seemed to think it would just happen. As it was the first quarter was tight, and there were only a couple of goals with both teams struggling to handle the windy conditions.
This was essentially the theme for the day, with Fitzroy struggling to hit targets with their kicks, and finding it difficult to judge the ball dropping quickly into the wind. As a result, players were getting pulled out of position, and at times both teams tried to just run the ball up the field, especially into the wind. As a result, there was a bit more uncertainty and bunches of players running after the ball. Goals for both teams were difficult to come by, especially when some of the goal posts at the top end of the ground kept getting blown over.
There was some great endeavour shown in the second half and it looked like a team we were thinking and learning about how to play in the wind. It was a good lesson for all of the team for that reason. The boys also identified after the game that they probably were not concentrating as much as they could have at the start of the game, and how important it is to think about where to kick the ball when it is so windy. Hopefully, it won’t be so windy next week for our final game of the year at Cox Oval.
Round #13 Coaches Report
Fitzroy v Heidelberg G
8:45 am Warringal Park
It was a bit of an unorthodox start to this game, first for a couple of players who ended up at the wrong ground, a few minutes up the road. Then the layout of the oval was a bit confusing, as the home team set out the ground to play half of the full field, but up and down the field, rather than across It meant the ground was wider than it was long, so it felt a little bit like we were playing sideways. An advantage of this approach, however, was that to one end at least we were kicking at the big goals, which the boys certainly enjoyed. Goals kicked at that end were celebrated with gusto throughout the game as it was also into the breeze.
Pre-game the boys were really steeling themselves for this game because they remembered this Heidelberg team keeping them to only one goal when we played them way back in round 2 at Brunswick St Oval. However, the Fitzroy 9.2’s are a different looking team from back then with most of a season under their belts and significant improvement across all of our players. It would be interesting to see how our improvement stacked up against Heidelberg.
We started off kicking into the wind, towards the big goal posts. The first quarter was a tight tussle. With both sides agreeing to play their full complement of 17, we had an extra player in the defensive and forward zones, so everyone got a pretty good run. We showed a lot of endeavours. What was particularly noticeable and impressive was the boys had taken on the message from Tue night training. We had focussed on playing man-on-man in defence and deliberately ran a few drills on it. It really showed, as the whole team played great defensively, and did a really good job of talking to each other to work out who was playing on who.
The shape of the ground did throw us a little bit, as a few times we were kicking sideways because there was so much space out on the wings, but it looked more crowded going forward. Given the wind, and unlike elite players, it is under for U9’s to pass accurately to their target, this was putting some extra pressure on us. We talked about it at quarter time, and the team really took on that message. The second quarter was perhaps our best quarter of footy for the year so far. The team really helped each other and we’re confident enough to take their shots when they had a chance. They tackled hard and were focussed at giving off their handballs when caught in tackles.
The game remained tight in the second half as well, but the team stuck at it and came away with a well-deserved result. It was also perhaps the most enjoyable game of the year to watch, with some strong tackling, and clever teamwork. A super effort all round.
Round #12 Coaches Report
Fitzroy v Preston Bullants W
8:45 am Cox Oval
It was a pretty cold morning and it was windy. We have had some wind at this ground before, but it was more noticeable today. This was our first game against another team that we had already played. While we were confident the team had been really improving during the season, it would be a real opportunity to compare how the game compared to the last time we played Preston.
Preston picked up the first goal of the game kicking with the wind and down the slope. As a team, we stayed focused and did a great job of working and running the ball into the wind. Throughout the game, the boys ran really well. They used the spaces well on the ground, and on a number of occasions played on, handballed to teammates on the run and kicked long with the wind. It was a really impressive game, and it was wonderful to see the skills that had clearly developed across the team over the season.
Round #11 Coaches Report
Fitzroy v St Mary’s B
8:45 am, Cox Oval
This was our last game of the ‘first round’ of the season, being the final team in our group of 11 teams for us to play. It was also nice to be back at Cox oval, as we seem to have played a lot more away games so far.
We thought this was likely to be a tough game as the other St Mary’s team were very strong. This turned out to be a really hard fought and tight game all morning. We didn’t really know how we would go given the team had played so little footy together in the past 5 weeks, as a result of holidays and our bye. Being the Sunday before school started up again, we had five of our regulars away, so it was going to be quite different. We were really grateful to the three players from the Fitzroy 9.1’s who filled in for us to make 15.
The first quarter was a bit confusing as a number of the St Mary’s players were running late, or lost or both, and their players filtered onto to the ground through the first quarter, but by quarter time we were back to normal.
It was a really close game all morning. Almost all the scoring was at the bottom end of the ground, with only one or two goals at the top end of the ground. While the game was really close and neither team was giving up goals easily, the players at the top end of the ground had to work to keep their focus to be ready when the ball did come to that end of the ground.
There were a few really great goals today, and it is noticeable that more of the boys are getting confidence at taking their time and kicking for goal, when earlier in the year they may not have done so. We lost a bit of our shape through the game, I suspect it was mainly due to the lack of training and game time in recent weeks. However, to offset that the boys really took on the job of getting first to the ball. The game today in patches really showed them how timing your run to get to the ball first can make such a big difference. The boys had also really taken on the encouragement to go for their marks and as a result, everyone was really throwing themselves into the game.
It remained unclear even after the game what the end result was, but we all knew that it was a very close game and it was exciting to watch.
Coaches Report Round #8 INDIGENOUS ROUND
ROUND ROBIN #7

Coaches Report Round #3
Coaches Report Round #2
A special occasion for round 2, getting to roll up and play on the historic Brunswick St Oval. Even more special given the late change of ground, everyone was still on schedule and there was no need to chase any players wandering over around Yarra Bend. There were however a few mouthguards and playing tops left at home. The machine is still a little creaky.
After round one’s drizzle, Melbourne sent us a beautiful sunny Sunday morning. If only it is like this every week. The boys were super keen, and involved and respectful of the ANZAC round service. Linked arm in arm they looked focused, even if a few did ask later what ANZAC is.
The game itself was a turning back of the clock to see Heidelberg (Richmond) Tigers take on the Roys. These teams last seen at this ground on 4 June 1966, when 14,000 turned out to see Richmond beat Fitzroy by 24 points.
Today, the 9.2 Roys started brightly. They moved the ball around, and handballed between teammates really well. They ran, tackled, held the ball in and put lots of pressure on. With most of the play in the Roys forward half it showed they were playing well. However, for some reason that remains unknown as there was no wind to speak of, the southern end remained the dominant scoring end all day. The benefit of an extra season of U8’s began to show and Heidelberg slowly got on top in the game. The Fitzroy boys did fantastically well and learnt alot that will be able to put into practice next week.
