FJFC Girls Program
April 3, 2026
Fitzroy Junior Football Club’s Girls Program has continued to build strong momentum through the 2026 pre-season, with a number of targeted development sessions already rolling out across multiple age groups.
Players from U9 through to Youth Girls have taken part in sessions delivered by AFLW players, Max Viney and Harmit Singh, each bringing a different focus to support the girls at key stages of their football journey.
A program already in action…
Across the pre-season, players have experienced:
- AFLW Player Sessions – creating energy, inspiration and connection through visible female role models
- Confidence in Contact & Safe Tackling with Max Viney – helping players build confidence and technique as the game becomes more physical
- Specialist Skills Sessions with Harmit Singh – supporting skill development and progression, particularly at Youth Girls level
The feedback from players and families has been overwhelmingly positive, with strong engagement, great energy at training, and a noticeable lift in confidence across the groups.
Why the program is designed this way
The Girls Program has been intentionally structured to reflect the different needs of players as they move through the age groups.
Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, each component focuses on what matters most at that stage:
- U9–U12: building enjoyment, confidence and connection through positive experiences and role models
- U14–U16: supporting retention by developing confidence in contact and safe tackling as the game evolves
- Youth Girls: refining skills and supporting continued development and progression
This approach aligns with broader AFL guidance around creating safe, age-appropriate environments that build both confidence and capability over time, while also supporting long-term participation.
More than sessions — a connected pathway
Importantly, these sessions are not standalone initiatives. They form part of a connected, whole-of-club pathway designed to give girls and families a clear understanding of what their football journey at FJFC can look like.
From first participation through to Youth Girls, the program is designed to:
- Build confidence and a sense of belonging
- Support safe and enjoyable participation
- Provide visible role models and pathways
- Strengthen development and progression opportunities
A program for now — and for the future
The Girls Program has been designed as a repeatable, year-on-year model, giving players consistency as they move through the club and ensuring each age group benefits from a structured and supportive experience.
By embedding this approach, FJFC is continuing to invest in a program that supports participation, development and retention — while reinforcing its commitment to providing a strong and sustainable girls football pathway.
